Buying a Weight Bench: Flat vs Adjustable

The foundation of safe lifting. Do you need an incline?

A bench turns a pair of dumbbells into a complete gym. But not all benches are born equal. A flimsy bench is the most dangerous item in your setup.

Safety First

Look for the 'User Weight Rating'. A cheap bench might say '200kg max', but that includes YOU. If you weigh 90kg and lift 60kg, you're fine. If you get stronger, you might snap it. Look for 300kg+ ratings for peace of mind.

Flat vs FID (Flat/Incline/Decline)

**Flat Benches:** Cheaper, lighter, rock solid. Great if you only bench press. **FID Benches:** allow shoulder pressing (upright) and chest targeting (incline). Essential for a complete physique but cost more for stability.

Budget Reality

Expect to pay £100-£150 for a safe start-up bench. Anything under £60 is likely 'leisure grade' and wobble-prone.
